Aviation Education

Education is one of the three cornerstones of the OAA. And Aviation Education is an important part of the value that Oceanside Airport adds to our community. Below are some links and information related to aviation. We hope this information helps you understand more about the industry that our country developed and leads today. We encourage you to learn more about aviation and aviation technologies, and either consider them as a career or just getting involved in general aviation. It can all start here, at your Community Airport...

*Educational speakers are available, email us for info*
Palomar College Palomar College Aviation Courses
Palomar College has a complete Aviation Sciences program. The program is run by Jerry Houser, a former flight instructor that got his start at Oceanside Airport. Click on the icon for more information.

An introduction to aviation for kids and teenagers
Get your kids hooked on sciene and technology through aviation! The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) regularly hosts free educational flights at the airport for children ages 8 to 17 as a part of their Young Eagles Program. The Oceanside Airport program is run by local EAA Chapter 286. Kids must have a special EAA Registration Form signed by their parent and guardian. The program begins with a pre-flight briefing and flights continue until all applicants with Registration forms have flown. Please contact the local chapter's flight coordinator, John Alling, to confirm dates, times and other details. You can also check our calendar for Oceanside Airport's regular EAA flight schedule. See you on Saturday, Eagles!

NASA Future Flight NASA
Check out some of the projects in the works for future air transportation. And, yes, they will still need airports to operate the new vehicles. Lots of small airports, as a matter of fact. Check out the link to NASA Speaks, a joint effort by NASA Langley’s Center for Distance Learning and the LifeLong Learning Society at Christopher Newport University (CNU), presents Future of Flight, a five week lecture series featuring scientists and engineers from one of the three major aeronautics programs at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The presentations, include video and slides.

Learn To Fly and Reach the Sky

Flying in the control seat of a small general aviation aircraft or piloting an airplane yourself has been a life changing event for many youths and adults. Piloting is not as difficult and is much safer than you may think. And if you don't have the resources, there are pilots who will donate their time and aircraft to help you experience flight first-hand. This section lists some national and local aviation programs that you, your family members and your friends can become involved in. If you are a pilot, we encourage you to become involved and donate your time to volunteer for one these programs. If you are not a pilot, please keep in mind that the OAA accepts membership from pilots and non-pilots alike! Thinking about joining? Click on the Join link to the left side of your screen.

AOPA Flight Training
AOPA's Learn To Fly site

Here you'll learn the basics of getting a pilot certificate and read personal accounts of people who have done it. We think you'll find it interesting and enjoyable reading, and we hope it will help convince you to take a drive to your local airport and sign up for a first flight.

Aviation History in Oceanside

This is a short history of aviation in Oceanside and the surrounding area that may be an interesting starting place for students school reports on the subject. If any students would like to consider researching and adding to this history please contact the OAA at the links provided and we'll find someone to work with you.

AVIATION IN OUR AREA
The historic flight of Charles Lindburg started from San Diego in an aicraft built in San Diego.

A small airline, Bonanza Airlines, was one of the first airlines in the area.

Oceanside once had 3 airports, Vista had one and San Marcos had one airport.
