Private plane and pilot fly into space and history...
Ever want to be an astronaut but gave up on your dream? Maybe it’s time you think about it again--take a look at private aviation...
Congratulations to a California Pilot and an EAA member Michael W. Melvill for his historic spaceflight on Monday June 21, 2004. Michael flew N328KF, named SpaceShipOne, from 1624 Flightline, Hangar 78, Mojave CA, into space, and safely back to the airport from which he departed.
Michael not only left the Earth behind on Monday morning, he made his entry into the history books as the first person to pilot a private spacecraft to carry humans into space. SpaceShipOne flew more than 62 miles above Earth's surface during its brief flight. "It was an uneventful re-entry and that's what we designed it for" said EAA Member Burt Rutan, who designed and built SpaceshipOne, the first civilian spaceflight, and airplane, to make it into space. N328KF touched down safely at Mojave Airport at 8:15 AM. This proves it is now possible to reach space from a regular, plain old airport.
